Maintaining
Zoysia Matrella
Zoysia Matrella is a tropical species with greater heat tolerance, it is an excellent shade grass with good salt tolerance. It has low growth, fertiliser and mowing rates.
It is extremely soft and “cushiony”, with a very dense dark green colour.
Watering
Week 1 – Water your lawn 3-4 times, mainly during the heat of the day e.g 8am – 12pm – 3pm
Week 2 – Water 2-3 times a day for longer periods
Week 3 – Water once a day
Week 4 – Water twice a week
Mowing
Because Zoysia grows slower than other turfs, taking extra care of newly-laid turf is essential to allow enough time to root down properly.
-
To avoid scalping, the grass should not be allowed to grow too long before mowing.
-
Lawn may be mowed once the roots have taken hold. Check by trying to lift the rolls and ensure your turf has a tight bind to the soil. (If the rolls have not even slightly taken root within 2 weeks then something may be wrong with the soil)
-
Keep your lawn below 1 ½ inches
-
It can be mowed short to achieve a bowling green appearance, between 20mm and 30mm
-
For best results keep mower blades sharp.
The slow growth of Zoysia means less mowing than faster growing grasses like couch or buffalo grass.
You MUST still mow your Zoysia Matrella and keep it under 1 ½ inches long. (Just like you normally would other lawns)
Check the length by spreading open your lawn and using your finger to touch the soil below.
Zoysia Matrella doesn’t look like it is growing as the entire lawn lifts in height.
Please ensure you still mow regularly, weekly if possible.
Fertilising
4 - 6 weeks after laying your new Zoysia VERY sparingly apply a slow release fertiliser, which is high in Nitrogen.
Over fertilising will cause thatching
Do not make more than two applications per year. Please use one with pest control included.
* Please ensure measures are taken to prevent children and animals from ingesting fertiliser granules whilst they are still visable on the ground. (Eg. via balls, toys etc.)
Pests
Please use a preventative!
See our Lawn Care section for information on how to Prevent, Detect, Treat and Repair your lawn from grubs.
Pesticides with the product Bifenthrin can be used as a preventative.
